Overview: The National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association is an organization of journalists, news executives, media professionals, educators and students working from within the news industry to advance fair and accurate coverage of LGBT issues.

Reporting to the board of directors’ Executive Committee, the executive director will ensure the effectiveness of all the organization's operations, including financial management, fundraising, membership development, program development and communications.The executive director will also work with the board to implement strategic plans for the organization.

Responsibilities include the following:

Management and Administration

  • Oversee daily operations, including managing cash flow, accounts payable, accounts receivable, internal financial controls and facilities and equipment
  • Work with the board of directors’ Finance and Development Committee to develop an annual budget and provide regular reports on revenue, expenses and cash flow
  • Oversee high-level administrative tasks, including the annual audit and local, state, district and federal business, tax and reporting requirements
  • Supervise, train and direct three staffers to support program enhancement and growth
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with vendors and consultants

Fundraising & Development

  • Work with the board’s Finance and Development Committee and the development director to create and implement a fundraising strategy for the organization, including foundation grants, special events, corporate sponsorships, individual donations and other revenue 
  • Ensure all gifts are acknowledged and/or reported as appropriate
  • In coordination with the development director, identify, cultivate, solicit and steward qualified grant and donor prospects and any needed related program development
  • Work with the president to ensure 100 percent board giving
  • Develop revenue-generating programs that are sustainable

Planning and Programs

  • Develop and execute short- and long-term programs, working closely with the board and individual project leaders, as well as new and existing partners
  • Manage all logistics for the organization's annual convention and LGBT media summit, including site visits, contract negotiation and vendor selection
  • Assist the Convention Programming Committee with the development of the convention program
  • Oversee execution of student, professional development, news industry relations and community outreach programs, including program evaluation

Communications

  • At the board’s direction, lead development, distribution and promotion of external and internal communications in coordination with the president, the Executive Committee and the communications coordinator
  • Oversee the maintenance of the organization's website and social media presence
  • Foster collaborative relationships with other journalism organizations in an effort to enhance NLGJA programs

Membership and Chapters

  • Work with the Membership and Diversity Committee, the chapter presidents’ liaison, and the membership coordinator to ensure that NLGJA's chapters continue to effectively serve the organization’s members
  • Oversee membership administrative duties, including application and renewal processing, renewal/lapsed member outreach and all other membership administrative needs
  • Support efforts of the Membership and Diversity Committee to improve membership retention and attract new members

Experience/Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 5-plus years’ management experience with a nonprofit, preferably with an association
  • 5-plus years' demonstrated experience in program and fund development

  • Experience developing and managing a budget between $500,000-$1 million, 
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping/accounting procedures
  • Excellent written/oral communications skills
  • Demonstrated experience in working with multiple committees
  • Demonstrated experience in working on collaborative projects or partnerships with other organizations
  • Proficiency with MS Office programs required
  • Experience with convention/event planning a plus
  • Experience managing a website, social media and other electronic communications a plus
  • Experience working for a member-driven organization a plus
  • Previous knowledge of/or interest in the media industry is preferred but not required
  • Previous knowledge of/or interest in the LGBT community is preferred but not required
