NLGJA Announces 2011 Student Project Participants
The NLGJA's Student Project will bring together 12 Journalism Students to the Organization's National Convention & LGBT Media Summit in Philadelphia, PA
Washington D.C. – The National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association is pleased to announce its 2011 National Convention Student Project class. 12 students interested in careers in journalism and communications have been selected to serve as the onsite news organization for the organization's 2011 National Convention & 8th Annual LGBT Media Summit, taking place at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel, August 25-28.
The Student Project has been providing real-world experience to undergraduate and graduate students for more than 12 years. Students participating in the 2011 Student Project will work with media professionals to report, edit, photograph, design and produce the news of NLGJA's National Convention while furthering their own interest in ensuring fair and accurate coverage of the LGBT community. The students participating in this year's project represent a diverse group from nine colleges and universities:

- Laura Murray, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism
- Layla Pena , University ofIowa, Iowa City
- Jorge Salazar, Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication
- Shanna Wester, Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication
“We want to do everything we can to equip new journalists with the tools and connections necessary to be successful” said Caroline Que, Student Project Coordinator. “These 12 students will learn the skills required to report fairly and accurately on LGBT issues while taking part in training sessions, discussions and professional networking events with over 300 media industry leaders.”
