In nearly every case when we asked about the financial impact to the company, we were told either that costs were negligible or that the company had not bothered to track the numbers (suggesting they expected minimal impact). The data below are based on 1999 interviews unless otherwise noted.

Companies offering DP benefits to both same-sex and opposite-sex domestic partners are indicated by the words, "all eligible."

Individual listings in this directory will quickly become outdated, given the fast pace of adoption of DP benefits and continued mergers and acquisitions in the news industry.

ABC Inc. A division of Disney. Offered corporate-wide as of 1994 to same-sex partners. Eligible: 7,000 employees not covered by union funds. Enrolled as of 1996: <1%.

Advance Publications, Staten Island, N.Y. Offered to same-sex partners in most corporate divisions by December, 2000 (some earlier). Employs 26,300 people.

Allegient Media, San Francisco. Pays for individual health insurance policies of employees's domestic partners. Owns DiversityInc.com.

AOL Time Warner, New York, N.Y. Offered by Time Warner to same-sex partners of employees as of 1994. Enrolled: 128 (0.2%) of 67,000 employees as of 1999. Merger with AOL approved in 2001.

The Associated Press, as of July 1, 2003. Offered to 1,700 editorial employees of the news service in the News Media Guild. More information to follow as details of this new agreement are disclosed.

Bakersfield Californian, Bakersfield, Calif. Offered since at least 1996. This private company declined to give details.

Belo Corporation, Dallas, Texas, 2003. Employs 7,800 employees in the United States.

Bloomberg, L.P. All eligible as of September, 2000. Employs more than 8,000 worldwide.

CBS Corp., New York, N.Y. Offered as of 2000 to same-sex partners of employees.

Daily Herald, Arlington Heights, IL. Medical and dental insurance to eligible domestic partners starting Jan. 1, 2004. The suburban Chicago newspaper will also offer the same benefits as employee's spouses, including health fair testing and bereavement pay.

Desert Television, LLC, Palm Springs, CA. Offers full domestic partner benefits.
