Podunk: NLGJA's Smaller Markets Task Force
Programs > Podunk: NLGJA's Smaller Markets Task Force

What is the Smaller Markets Task Force?

Not all NLGJA members are city folk.

Believe it or not, some NLGJA members hang their hats outside of the big city in places where connecting with fellow members and participating in chapter events is not always possible. There are more NLGJA members living and working in smaller markets than most know about, read about or see at NLGJA events.

The Smaller Markets Task Force is a group of NLGJA members dedicated to establishing a sense of community among those who live outside of major cities and/or in areas and regions that are not proximate to existing chapters.

Some of the goals of the Smaller Markets Task Force include:

  • Facilitating interaction and providing resources for NLGJA members in smaller markets through interactive tools like NLGJA’s Smaller Markets Listserv.
  • Providing avenues for career development for journalists who are using smaller markets as stepping stones.
  • Addressing issues of LGBT coverage in smaller markets.
  • Educating student and early-career journalists about the realities of living and working in smaller markets.
  • Recruiting and retaining more members in smaller markets to facilitate new chapter formation.
