NLGJA Announces Internship Opportunity, New Partnership With Oakland Tribune & Bay Area News GroupEast Bay

NLGJA is pleased to announce a new partnership with The Oakland Tribune and the Bay Area News Group—East Bay (BANG-EB).

Starting summer 2008, NLGJA and BANG-EB will establish the Leroy F. Aarons Newsroom Internship to provide one NLGJA student member the opportunity to participate in a paid, 10-week internship at The Oakland Tribune.

Funded through a generous grant from The Chicago Tribune Foundation, the internship is named for NLGJA founder and former Oakland Tribune Executive Editor Leroy (Roy) F. Aarons. The position is open to NLGJA student members who are undergraduates, graduate students or recent graduates. Previous internship experience is preferred.

Applicants should demonstrate an interest in a career in print and multimedia journalism, as well as a commitment to NLGJA’s mission of ensuring fair and accurate coverage of LGBT individuals and the issues that most affect them.

To Apply

To apply, student applicants should submit the following:

  • A cover letter explaining your career goals and how you see NLGJA’s mission of working “within the news industry to foster fair and accurate coverage of LGBT issues” impacting your work and work life.
  • A one-page résumé.
  • Six to 10 samples of your work. These samples should be submitted in an 8”x10” format. For applicants submitting hard copy materials, work samples will not be returned.
  • Three letters of reference.
  • Applicants who are not current NLGJA student members or whose memberships have lapsed must complete either the online membership application or submit a completed application by mail prior to the application deadline. The membership application is available here.

Deadline for applications is Friday, February 29, 2008. Applications must be received by NLGJA’s National Office by this date to be considered. Electronic applications are preferred. Application materials can be sent—as PDF or Word documents—to tavila@nlgja.org.
