WASHINGTON, DC - The National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA) announces its call for nominations for the 2005 Excellence in Journalism Awards.

The awards will be presented in Chicago on September 24 at NLGJA's 15th Anniversary Gala Celebration & Awards Ceremony. The awards are unique in the journalism industry because they were specifically created to foster, recognize and reward excellence in journalism on issues related to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities.

Open to journalists nationwide, the awards honor journalistic merit in the following categories:

  • NLGJA Journalist of the Year Award
  • NLGJA Excellence in Writing Award News/Feature, sponsored by Hearst Newspapers

  • NLGJA/Seigenthaler Excellence in Television Award (Network & Top-5 DMA ’s)
  • NLGJA/Seigenthaler Excellence in Television Award (DMA 6+)
  • NLGJA/Seigenthaler Excellence in Radio Award
  • NLGJA Excellence in New Media Journalism Award
  • NLGJA Excellence in Photojournalism Award
  • Sarah Pettit Memorial Award for Excellence in LGBT Media
  • NLGJA Excellence in HIV/AIDS Coverage Award
  • NEW! NLGJA Excellence in Student Journalism Award

Winners in each category will receive $500 and be honored at the September 24 ceremony. The second and third place runners-up will receive certificates and special recognition at the ceremony.

"As the only professional journalist organization that works within our profession to foster fair and accurate coverage of LGBT issues, we believe it is especially important to spotlight and recognize outstanding journalistic endeavors,” said Pamela Strother, NLGJA Executive Director.

“Our mission of fair and accurate coverage includes recognizing the best work produced by LGBT journalists, and our annual awards are a significant part of that recognition. This year, we will again expand the program with a new award, one with special significance. We can think of no better way to further reward our colleagues' professionalism than to include an award for student journalism, recognizing the next generation of news gatherers that our late founder, Roy Aarons, was so dedicated to helping," said Eric Hegedus, NLGJA National President.

The deadline for postmark for entries is June 30, 2005. All entries must be mailed to NLGJA Awards, 1420 K Street NW, Suite 910, Washington, DC 20005. The program is open to all journalists and news organizations.

A committee of professionals in journalism will select winners. There is no limit on the number of entries by a single author or from one publication except where the rules allow a “body of work.” Each story or series requires it own entry fee. NLGJA officers and directors and those individuals directly involved in the administration and/or selection of the awards are ineligible for consideration.
